Dearest Squad,
We have arrived! This essay goes along with the last chapter of Thieftess, now live on Patreon.
This chapter was supposed to be an Epilogue.
But THESE KIDS TODAY (none of whom are probably reading this book anyway) apparently DON’T READ EPILOGUES. So here we are.
I was in Greensboro in early January 2026, and I knew I was going to need one more character. So I asked my friend Jermaine Exum (owner of the fabulous ACME Comics in Greensboro, NC) if he’d like me to base this last character on him—a magenta-skinned man from the northern mountain region.
“Sure,” he said, but he didn’t have a name picked out. “Just do something with my last name,” he suggested.
I already had a list of possible names for dwarfs in my research, many of which I didn’t use—I pulled from that as well. And so, the character of Jexum Thul was born.
Jexum has one last fun tidbit of information to impart to our main characters—it’s nothing the novel couldn’t have lived without, but you know how much I love tying up loose ends. Plus, I wanted to take this opportunity to fully weave in a bit of the setting from on of my favorite short stories: The Glass Mountain.
It took me far too long to realize how often mountains appeared in my writing.
You can take the girl out of Vermont…
Most of my mountains are “in the north.” In “The Dust Wish,” the mountains were east of the Middle Sea. (The Middle Sea is also featured in “The Seal-Woman’s Tale.”) And now that we’ve mentioned The Immortal Lands…the original mention of which was in the Trix books…
Yup. You guessed it. There will be mountains in the south, too. One day, Trix will totally get to see them. Whenever Trix and the Fire Witch gets written.
But first…
I need to work on the outline for Book Five (Endless). I always knew that Wednesday’s story would be the hardest one for me to write. It has a LOT of moving parts. If my French doors end up looking like a serial killer board, I’ll take a picture.
But before that…
There’s another book I’m really dying to finish before Christmas. It’s a romance, set in Vermont, and it’s totally going to have a lot of sex in it. (At least, the NSFW version will.)
It’s called Green Mountain Girl.
Wish me luck!
Happy Thursday! 💜
