THIEFTESS Chapter 28: The Luckiest of Men

Dearest Squad,

A new chapter is now live! Chapter 28: The Luckiest of Men

I often think about how much of this book could not have been written ten years ago. Like even just this chapter title, for instance, which was inspired by Harrison Ford’s magnificent Life Achievement Award speech at the SAG awards in March.

“I am indeed a lucky guy. Lucky to have found my people, lucky to have work that challenges me, lucky to still being doing it. And I don’t take that for granted.”

I was crying long before he said those words. So much of that speech resonated with me, as both a child actor and an adult author struggling to make ends meet and still dependent on so much support from others.

But this chapter, Hawk’s chapter, had been milling about in my head for long before that, taking shape, getting ready to be told. And I could hear Hawk saying those same words. Even after all he’d been through, a life full of ordeals so terrible that amnesia was a blessing, he would say he was a lucky man. Even without memories, he would know he was lucky to be among these people — yes, even this ship of fools — who loved him so much that they refused to give up on him.

We all need those people.

We all need that hand we can take every time the sky falls down.

Hawk doesn’t have to know Thursday to know how lucky he is to have her for a wife. She risked her own life to save his, and he is not the kind of person who would take that for granted.

I may take away a character’s memories, but even I can’t erase the person they were born to be.

PS: Yes, Yorgo Krakatoa is absolutely 100% George Kourounis. I’ll tell y’all more about that in the intro to his chapter. Storm Chase family FTW!
