A few people expressed their dismay that they had no idea I was going to Penguicon, and I gave them all the same answer: I was incognito. I’ve been attending conventions for about 15 years now, and only in the last few have I been invited as a guest. Sometimes, I still like going to cons just to be a fan. Not having to be on a panel schedule is a bit of a luxury, really. And I don’t mind paying for a badge — I support small, local conventions like I support my local independent bookstores. I see value in spending money on things I want to stay around. (Amazing, right?)
With all that in mind, here’s a list of the "working" conventions I’ve planned for this year:

May 15-17
Mo*Con IV: A New Hope

(Note: I will be displaying my recent artwork there — I’m waiting to set up an Etsy site until afterwards, to insure that I’ll still have enough pieces to show.)

Hypericon 5 / DeepSouthCon 47
Nashville, TN

July 16-19

But but but…WFC?
If I can scrape together enough $$ (like maybe sell a book) and crash on someone’s floor…
I’m really going to try.
Yay!
I have four ppl in my room already :/…but if you need someone to pick you up from the airport or anything, lemme know, i’m local, i’d love to help out.
You know, if you were any sweeter, you’d have to be worried about melting in the rain. Thanks! xox
You’re NECONing? Yay!
Oh — you are too? Fabulous!!!
Someone has to bring the weird, ancient scotch…

What no worldcon?
What was your first SF con and why did you go?
No money, no Worldcon. Plus, this justifies me saving up for Australia.
My very first convention was Dragon*Con, back in 1996. I was a bookseller at a Waldenbooks in South Carolina. Back in those days, all the publishers would come and have a retail exhibitors day on Thursday night. My boss was a true-blue SF geek and best friends with all the editors from Del Rey. It was awesome.
To this day, I think of Dragon*Con (and Hypericon in Nashville) as my “hometown” cons.
If I lived in Nashville those would be my home cons too.
I know what you mean about worldcon expenses this is my first since 2003 which was also a Canadian city and in my equivalence of Atlanta.
