Dearest Squad,
“Le roi est mort, vive le roi!” has always been one of my favorite sayings. I’ve been reading books and speaking other languages for so long that I don’t even remember when I first learned it.
“The king is dead, long live the king!” may sound like nonsense, but it refers to TWO different kings. In 1400’s France, it was law that sovereignty did not pass to the new king until the old one was dead. This proclamation meant that the previous king was officially gone–now it’s time to cheer for the new king.
I have known and loved this phrase for so long that it didn’t occur to me that OTHER PEOPLE might not know it…until that first copyedit of ENCHANTED came in and I was asked to delete the last half of the sentence because it was “confusing.” (I was also forced to take out the word “faze” because it “sounds too modern”, but I digress.)
I have been longing to release a director’s cut of ENCHANTED (Alethea’s Version) that fixes stuff like this, and replaces all of the stories about Rumbold and the Woodcutters that I was asked to remove…because traditionally published YA novels need to be 75K or less for maximum profit. (The original draft of SUNDAY came in at 107K)
In the meantime, the title of this chapter is a bit of a callback to that phrase, that copyedit, and the fact that there’s a Troll King that currently needs killing. Brace yourselves…
