They say you don’t have to be a writer to write an artist’s statement.

Oops.

I’m the writer in my family. My little sister is the artist. In a way, I considered art "off limits" because Soteria had already called dibs.

I love art. My first boyfriend was an artist (and total emotional drama queen…sheesh). I’ve always wished I could draw, but whatever I attempted never looked like the beautiful things I saw in my head.

So I became a "copier." If someone else had already drawn it, I copied it. I had notebooks filled with Bettys & Veronicas.

When we were sent Disney character artwork for a promotion at the movie theatre where I worked, I matched the paint so perfectly you would have thought they’d stepped right off the screen. I made asteroids out of Styrofoam and spray paint. I copied the Grinch and Cindy Lou Who onto cardboard to decorate my office for Christmas. I filled coloring books. I painted Dungeons & Dragons miniatures.

Turns out, THAT’S ART.

Oops.

I recently needed a break from the novel I was working on, so I plopped down in the middle of my living room floor with a canvas, a box of almost-forgotten acrylics, and a bunch of old magazines, just to play around and blow off some creative steam. Imagine how shocked I was to discover that the result DIDN’T SUCK.

And so The Dream-Haired Woman was born. There’s a whole story that goes with her, of course, one that’s slightly longer than the thousand words in your standard picture. (It is ME, after all.) But I’m still kind of stunned.

My little sister better watch out. I’m playing in her sandbox now, and I’m not giving her toys back.

Of course, if Soteria suddenly decides she wants to write a novel, she’s welcome to it.
