One Spectacular Birthday

When Leanna and I first came up with this crazy idea on the streets of New York City, it sounded silly. Sure, I could ask a bunch of my friends to wear tiaras on my birthday…but would they? Was this going to be the dumbest idea in the history of ideas? Was I going to regret my 1-11-11 birthday for the rest of my life? What kind of disaster had I set myself up for?

But once the idea was out there, I didn’t have time to change my mind. Christmas happened, and then FGB’s family Christmas, and then New Year’s, and then Greek Christmas, and then suddenly I was in Florida and it was my father’s birthday and we were eating lobsters at the table and they were begging me to open my birthday presents. The plane landed back in DC a little over 24-hours before the 1-11-11 deadline, and I was too worn out to care if the dynamite I’d lit blew up or not.

The fireworks started to sizzle the night of the 10th, as my birthday rolled around to Australia and India…and then it exploded.

At last count, before Facebook gave up, over 350 people had posted on my wall. There are 136 (and counting) photos in the Tiara Birthday Spectacular Album, and I’m still hunting them down all over the internet. (If you don’t see yours there, please email me!) I spent hours yesterday and today putting the album together. It is nothing short of amazing. There are people of all ages and sexes, in person, animated, or photoshopped. There are animals, both real and not real, from dogs and cats to lizards and bunnies (and those are all live). There are people I’ve known for years and people I’ve only met online. There are family members and there are complete strangers…but they all have one thing in common: I love them all. And every single one of them — to a person and animal — unique and spectacular.

I’ve also realized that 1.) it takes a real man to wear a tiara, 2.) my friends are incredibly inventive and original, Q.) they have some gorgeous tiaras and 82.) I don’t have a pink feather boa. Apparently, when one owns a tiara, one often owns a pink feather boa as well. Who knew?

I’m going to go ahead and chalk up this birthday as a win. I hope you all had half as much fun as I did yesterday. And thank you, all of you, so very very much, from the bottom of my Royal Heart. xox

Happy Birthday, Pig!

Tracy just pointed out that today was also Pig’s birthday from Pearls Before Swine!

This is super special and awesome to me — you might remember, I’m a big fan of Stephan Pastis. He’s a super nice and crazy fun guy. He’s also a Talented Capricorn of Greek Descent — his birthday’s later this week. Some of you might remember the YouTube video I made for his birthday last year, starring the cast of Pearls Before Swine. I just watched it again. It’s still silly and fabulous and I’m so glad I did it.

I have always been jealous that Soteria shared a birthday with Garfield the Cat (June 19th). Now I don’t have to be jealous ANY MORE. Thank you, Stephan!!

Best Birthday Photo Album Ever

…and it’s not even 11:11 yet! I already have tiara greetings from all over the world from humans, dogs, cats, fish…even piggies! The tiaras are wide-ranging and imaginative, and the only things I love more are the people wearing them.

Here’s my birthday twin, author Richard Wright, who is currently in New Delhi and also celebrating a 1-11-11 birthday today. Check out his spectacular bowler hat tiara…and click on his picture to see the rest of the photo album. And check back…I’ll be adding photos as I get them all throughout the day!

Happy birthday, Rick!

Happy 1-11-11, everyone!!! *hugs*

The Princess’s Birthday Eve

I am currently kicking myself. For my birthday, Dad got together an entire collage of the folks he works with at Knight’s Armament, all wearing tiaras. That’s right — crowns, books, and guns galore — and I left the CD on the dining room table. Mom put it in a box with the rest of my presents and it’s on its way to me…but I wanted to post it NOW, in anticipation of tomorrow’s big event. *sigh* The best laid plans of mice and men. And princesses.

This, of course, does not stop me from officially launching the photo album a day early, however…I just don’t have as many pictures to fill it. This, of course, means I get to save the best for first: the loveliest of lovelies, Leanna Renee Hieber sent me a picture with her AWESOME Edward Gorey tiara!

Is your tiara polished? Give me your best smile and snap that picture! I can’t wait to see you guys!

Princess Alethea’s World-Wide Tiara Birthday Spectacular!

The votes are in, and everybody agrees. Mark your calendars!

What: Princess Alethea’s 35th Birthday Spectacular
When: January 11, 2011
Where: Your blog (or facebook page)
Who: YOU, wearing a tiara!

As discussed previously,35 is my mother’s favorite number. I’m only going to turn 35 once. As it happens, that happy event will occur in less than a month, on 1-11-11. (It’s a Tuesday.) If I don’t do something BIG, I’m going to regret it for the rest of my life. (I generally try not to regret things.)

I’m very excited and it’s a very big deal. As I don’t have the resources to throw a ball worthy of Cinderella (yet), I still want to find a way to celebrate this day with all my favorite people in the world. That’s right, that means YOU.

So here’s the plan: on January 11th (at 11:11, if you can), post a picture of yourself wearing a tiara. Post it on your blog or Facebook, or email it to me and I’ll stick them in the photo album. Camera shy? Post the whole family, or your pets, or your teddy bear wearing a tiara. Don’t have a tiara? Make one out of aluminum foil. Go to this website and make a paper tiara in a few simple steps.

You can do it! It’s easy, it’s cheap, and you now have something to post about on a random Tuesday. Laugh! Have fun! BE ORIGINAL! You have a month to get creative. And please, spread the word! I’m only going to have one 1-11-11 birthday, and I give you all express permission to spam the world about it.

Please help make my birthday the most awesome, shiny 1-11-11 birthday a girl could have. Thank you!

The Birthday Dilemma

Okay, guys. I need your help on this one.

My sister and I were once discussing our favorite numbers. My mother pondered aloud what her own favorite number might be. Without missing a beat, my sister and I immediately spouted “35.” It’s always been 35 with my mother. “I have told you 35 times to empty that dishwasher” or “Casey has called about 35,000 times. Will you please tell her what you’re doing tonight?” The funny thing was, until that moment, she’d never noticed. Now it’s a big family joke.

My birthday is in less than a month — 1-11-2011, as a matter of fact. Any guess how old I’ll be? You got it. My mother’s favorite number.

I remember the morning I had that epiphany — that my 1-11-11 birthday would be my 35th. I’ve always known it was going to be a big deal…I just didn’t know what I was going to do. Plan a giant party? Host my own mini convention? Fly to London? Join the circus? So many options…

And now here we are in December 2010. A year ago I quit my job and moved to a different state. I’ve spent the time living as a full-time writer: which means I’m now sharing a tiny apartment with 3 lovely people, I’m in lots of happy debt while I wait on that lovely novel advance, and the Fairy GodBoyfriend’s having all those horrible troubles with his lovely hands that so far every single doctor has given up on. (And that’s on top of all the other dramas of life we don’t blog about.) Nevermind the fact that 1-11-11 is a TUESDAY. Who has a giant party on a Tuesday?

It’s really a super inconvenient time. BUT IT’S A REALLY BIG DEAL. Sure, I could celebrate my birthday at a more convenient time, but then the whole point of 1-11-11 is kind of missed. If I don’t make something awesome happen that day, I’m going to regret it for the rest of my life. And that’s the truth.

Which is why I’m asking for your help.

Leanna and I talked a lot about this while I was up in NY for the SFWA soiree. The best idea we came up with was to spread the word and have everyone I know post a picture of themselves wearing a tiara that day in honor of The Princess’s 1-11-11, 35th Birthday.

What do you think? Is this a good idea? It’s cheap and easy and totally doable and gives everyone a free blog topic that day. Do you think you, as my friends, would participate? Got any better ideas? Help!
