Part of Your World–Essays, Podcasts, and Awards

Hugo_Logo_1_200pxThe finalists for the 2018 Hugo Awards were recently announced. No surprise, I wasn’t among them.

And yet…I kind of was.

This year, Neil Clarke–of Clarkesworld Magazine–was shortlisted for Best Editor, Short Form, and Escape Pod finaled under Best Semiprozine.

How do I factor into these two things, do you ask?

The answer is here, in my latest essay for Clarkesworld“Another Word: Breathing Life Into Characters.”

I am honored to have been a contributing writer at Clarkesworld and a podcast narrator for Escape Pod over the past few years. I hope to continue this work for many years to come!

Congratulations to all the Hugo finalists!

Alethea Narrates: My Generations Shall Praise (Escape Pod 616)

Henderson and Kontis

“My Generations Shall Praise”: Author Samantha Henderson and Narrator Alethea Kontis

Samantha Henderson’s “My Generations Shall Praise” was first published in Interzone, November 2016, and reprinted in The Year’s Best Science Fiction 34, edited by Gardner Dozois.

I think maybe the editors were worried I wouldn’t want to do this performance–it’s a dark one. The MC is a baby-killing sociopath on death row, about to have her brain erased and mapped over by an affluent relation dying of cancer.

But as an actress…WOW. What a voice this character has! This might be my best performance so far.

Moreover: I think Katy would be excessively proud of me.

CONTENT WARNING: Contains frequent class-one cursing (f-bombs and the like), graphic description of murder, somewhat less graphic description of sexual assault, and bad parenting. Not for young ears.

Princess Alethea’s Fairy Tale Theatre: Episode 25

Episode 25: “The Marvelous Minstrel”

The Marvelous Minstrel…or perhaps the PSYCHOPATH MINSTREL, because seriously…this guy is a jerk. The ASPCA would *not* approve. And, quite frankly, neither do I.

Check out Princess Alethea’s Rant about this fairy tale HERE.

Princess Alethea’s Fairy Tale Theatre: Episode 24

Episode 24: “The Companionship of the Cat and The Mouse”

A fairy tale in which…well…cats will be cats and mice will be mice, and that’s just the way of the world.

“Black Hole Sun” on Cast of Wonders

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, Kelli Owen and I wrote an epistolary story about two teens–best friends with complications–at the end of the world. A teen-angsty-apocalyptic-sci-fi…sort of. But I will tell you this — it makes a REALLY FUN podcast. Thank you Cast of Wonders!

The story is narrated by Graeme Dunlop and Michelle Ristuccia. Michelle enjoys slowing down time in the middle of the night to read and review speculative fiction, because sleeping offspring are the best motivation. You can find out more about her rabid love of SFF, podcasting, and raising future geeklings at her blog, http://wakingdreamsblog.blogspot.com, stalk her on twitter at @mrsmica, or read her reviews at Tangent Online.

“The Monster & Mrs. Blake” on Cast of Wonders

Hello, world!

I’m back in town (for a little bit) and feeling better (finally!), so now I’m catching up on all the fun news. SO MANY AMAZING THINGS HAVE HAPPENED THIS MONTH!

Worry not, I’ve been calling Mom and telling her in person for most of this, as I do when I’m not able to blog every day…or when I’m sworn to secrecy. 🙂

But I forgot to tell even Mo about this one — Cast of Wonders was so thrilled to find out that I had some podcasting talents of my own that they asked me to narrate my spooky kids story “The Monster & Mrs. Blake”!

I love this story — it was originally intended to be for a podcast that James Maxey was putting together for Codex, back before podcasting was cool…and before I had any sort of software or hardware to make such a thing possible.

So it is my extreme honor to introduce this story to the world…in the format it was originally intended! Thank you, Cast of Wonders, for making this possible!

Anything Goes

I certainly hope Mom & Dad weren’t up at 11pm last night listening in to my podcast interview on ANYTHING GOES…and if you were happily in dreamland too, worry not! You can still listen to the interview in its 30-minute entirety HERE:

Friday Bonus!

Happy Friday, everyone!

A special bonus for you folks today (and for Mom, in case she doesn’t see this until Saturday) — I have been asked to do some narration for Cast of Wonders!

So, from time to time, you’ll be able to pop on and hear me read a fabulous young adult fantasy story handpicked by some very fine people. (Maybe even some of my own–hint, hint!) I’ll be sure to let you know when they go live.

Like…now! Listen to me read “Ieia” by S.L. Bickley HERE!

I had a lot of fun with this piece — tried a new setup, and realized upon listening some things that worked and things that didn’t…but overall I think it is a successful piece. (It was also a very quick turnaround, so I didn’t have the luxury of going back and recording the whole thing again.)

We’re moving to a new apartment next month, and I already have a space picked out in our walk-in closet to have a little table where I can create a small space just for podcasting. I’m so excited!

And yes…hopefully this will ultimately mean more episodes of PRINCESS ALETHEA’S FAIRY TALE THEATRE!

It’s all very exciting. xox

(PS — And tell me…is it just me, or does sometimes my recorded voice sound like Morena Baccarin?)
