Music Monday (Fairy Tale Edition)

Every Monday while I’m on book tour for Enchanted, I’m going to share a fun music video that features love, fairy tales, magic, or my inspirations.

Today’s song is “Fable” by Robert Miles.

Those fans of the 1998 fairy tale classic Ever After may recognize this song from the film’s trailer…but it was lamentably not included in the soundtrack. Thank goodness for the days of Google, when we no longer have to be kept about the dark about such things!

For the record, I adore Drew Barrymore and I love Ever After. It’s one of my favorite films. But I was angry after I saw it in the theatre because I knew in my heart that I could have told a better Cinderella story. I hope, with Enchanted, that I did.

This fan-made video for “Fable” features still shots from Ever After.

(You can still find the original trailer for Ever After here. The first song featured is Lorena McKennitt’s “The Mummer’s Dance.” “Fable” kicks in right about 1:03.)

Music Monday (Fairy Tale Edition)

Every Monday while I’m on book tour for Enchanted, I’m going to share a fun music video that features love, fairy tales, magic, or my inspirations.

Today’s song is “Presto” by Rush.

Back in the late 80’s, my best friend Casey and I heard a song on the radio with the lyrics: I am made from the dust of the stars and the oceans flow in my veins. We loved this so much that we wrote the quote on every notebook we owned and attributed it to Anonymous.

You can imagine my joy, many years later, the day a friend played this song in his car.

This video only a visual of the album cover, but the sound quality is decent.

Music Monday (Fairy Tale Edition)

Every Monday while I’m on book tour for Enchanted, I’m going to share a fun music video that features love, fairy tales, magic, or my inspirations.

Today’s song is, appropriately, “The Frog Prince” by Keane.

Several years ago I was looking for a new CD at the HMV in London, and a random woman handed me Keane’s Hopes and Fears album. “You will love every song on this,” she told me. She wasn’t wrong. Under the Iron Sea, Keane’s sophomore effort, wasn’t as popular in the US, but it has some of my favorite songs on it. Like this one.

An old fairytale told me
The simple heart will be prized again
A toad will be our king
And ugly ogres are heroes…

I can’t find an official video for “The Frog Prince,” but here’s a fun fan-made one featuring a collage of great pictures of the band.

Music Monday (Fairy Tale Edition)

Every Monday while I’m on book tour for Enchanted, I’m going to share a fun music video that features love, fairy tales, magic, or my inspirations.

Today’s song is “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” by Green Day.

People always want to know where an author gets her ideas. I was on the treadmill at the gym one afternoon when this song came on. I had just written “Sweetheart Come,” a shapeshifter fairy tale based on a Nick Cave song, and I wondered what other songs might similarly inspire me.

“Boulevard of Broken Dreams” has a melancholy tone that I could hear in Rumbold’s voice. The song also has a line in the chorus that personifies shadows. In what fairy tale do shadows play a major role? Why, Peter Pan, of course! (Peter lost his shadow and tried to use a bar of soap to stick it back on. Wendy Darling sewed it back with a needle and thread.)

How could someone lose their shadow? What magical properties would a shadow have? And, once removed, how could someone benefit from stealing someone else’s shadow? In the blink of an eye, I realized I had my Nameless King’s motivation.

Pretty sure I tripped on the treadmill over that one.

Music Monday (Fairy Tale Edition)

Every Monday while I’m on book tour for Enchanted, I’m going to share a fun music video that features love, fairy tales, magic, or my inspirations.

This week’s song is “Fairytale” by Sarah Bareilles. My dear friend Kit McCormick introduced this one to me a couple of years ago. As a Grimm Grrl, I love the lyrics. As a former stage actress, I love the video. Together, it’s complete perfection!

Music Monday (Fairy Tale Edition)

Every Monday while I’m on book tour for Enchanted, I’m going to share a fun music video that features love, fairy tales, magic, or my inspirations.

I’m kicking this feature off with a supercute song I discovered on the iPod of Fairy Goddaughter the First and fell in love with — “Happily Ever After” by He is We.

The video is a supercute love story as well. Watch and see!
